Abraham Altman

Born in Haifa on February 24th, 1941

Abraham Altman was a redhead kid from Haifa. When the war started his parents moved to a safer village. He remembers how the Arab village nextdoors was empty from one day to the next, the Jordanians took them, saying they would return after the war and come and live in our (the Jews,) houses… I was curious and went to see this empty village, the food was still on the stove, the donkeys were standing wherever… I was 7 and I took one home… My mom wasn’t happy “what will we do with a donkey?” I liked him. At night he ran away, my father woke me up, “Go fetch your donkey!” I searched for him for two days… And my parents were searching for me… Also for two days…
